One of my favorite buys of the season is unquestionably a cape. I found one at Zara that has major Celine vibes and is absolutely everything I’ve been looking for in a coat—bold, fashion-forward, and decidedly unique. Capes and cloaks had a huge presence on the runways, with designers like Oscar de la Renta and Prada styling the outerwear with everything from skinny jeans to leather pants and minis.
They’re powerful, alluring, and a little mysterious, exuding a touch of 19th-century romance, not to mention the fact that they’re an unquestionably chic alternative to the average wool coat. We’ve seen them on a plethora of fashion girls and celebrities so far this season, and we predict they’ll be all over our feeds by the time the leaves start to fall.
Ready to embrace the style in your everyday wardrobe? Whether you go for lighter poncho styles, heavier wool capes, plaid patterns, or dramatic ankle-length cloaks, capes are surprisingly easy to wear—throw one on with jeans and boots, or a miniskirt and tights for looks that will work for both day and night. Scroll below to get inspired on how to wear them and shop our favorites of the season.
At Celine, beautiful mid-length capes were thrown over sweaters, skinny jeans, and over-the-knee boots for a super-approachable and easy-to-emulate daytime look. Chanel’s floor-grazing cloaks were enchanting. Worn over trending leather trousers and ruffle-neck blouses, this is a gorgeous winter evening look. Luxury wool and knit capes in easy-to-wear neutral hues were worn over smart check trousers and sandals in a perfect look for fall temps. Capes were dominant at Miu Miu, taking center stage in the form of raincoats, trenches, and shearling fabrics, adding a dose of glamor to the average cold-weather coat. For added wow factor go for a cape in a confident and powerful red hue. Perfect for the holiday season. Caroline Maigret shows us how to create a stunning day-to-night look by pairing a black cape over a vibrant red outfit. Capes lend themselves perfectly for fancier events. We suggest throwing one over a pretty feminine dress at your next wedding. Don’t be afraid of prints and textures. A plaid, check, or tweed cape coat is a great alternative to your average blazer. Style your cape with a miniskirt for a cool layering effect that will add interest to your look. You can’t beat the price of this elegant topper. The fringe adds a playful touch. A water-resistant cape will keep you looking chic in the rain. This classic Burberry print will never go out of style. The double-breasted buttons add a chic look. There are so many cool ways to wear this reversible quilted cape coat. Just add skinny jeans and boots for a chic look.
